The Power Rangers franchise has navigated a tumultuous journey, with its ownership and creative direction shifting dramatically over the past two decades.
To understand its current trajectory, we must rewind to May 2018, when Hasbro acquired the brand from Saban Brands for a staggering $522 million. This pivotal deal granted Hasbro complete control, ushering in a new era for the decades-old phenomenon.
The Netflix Chapter: A Universe Unfulfilled
Fast forward to October 2021, Netflix entered the scene, securing exclusive U.S. streaming rights for Power Rangers Dino Fury Season 2 and becoming the home for much of the existing library. This partnership deepened in November 2021, when Hasbro announced acclaimed filmmaker Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F*ing World) would spearhead a reimagined Power Rangers universe across film and television, with Netflix as its primary platform. This ambitious collaboration was poised to be a major creative milestone.
However, by mid-2024, reports emerged that the Entwistle-led live-action reboot had stalled, with Netflix no longer moving forward.
Disney's Surprising Return to the Morphin Grid
Now, after a significant hiatus, Disney is stepping back into the Power Rangers fold. The company previously held the rights from 2001 to 2010. In March 2025, it was announced that a new live-action Power Rangers series is in early development for Disney+. This project marks a joint effort between Hasbro Entertainment and 20th Television, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians creatives Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz reportedly in discussions to serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners.
It's crucial to note that despite this collaboration, Hasbro retains full ownership and creative authority over the Power Rangers franchise. Disney+ merely provides a high-profile platform for this latest reboot.
Entwistle Reveals His Vision: A "Star Wars-Level" Saga
As Jonathan Entwistle embarks on his press tour for Karate Kid: Legends, he's begun shedding light on what his Netflix-bound Power Rangers reimagining entailed. In a Reddit AMA, Entwistle revealed his journey with the brand began way back in 2018 at Paramount, working on a movie version. When Hasbro acquired eOne, the movie was shelved, and the focus shifted to a TV series.
"I started work on that, mapping out how that could work with multiple movies, shows and animations," Entwistle explained. "We worked closely with Netflix on all of that. And then eOne was no more and the whole concept of the show and movies just got lost in that shuffle. It really sucks because it was such a cool approach, Star Wars level, but I think Hasbro just couldn't get everyone behind the same approach."
He elaborated on his grand scheme: "...I wasn't doing MMPR specifically, but Tommy Oliver was the center of the world, all the mythology was surrounding him being one of the most important people in the universe... because we all know what he would become. So it was basically a time-bending HUGE story about stopping Drakkon from taking power over everything."
Entwistle's TV series concept held a "really cool King Arthur-vibe, that was the angle, more mystical, magical to start us off." He even teased a "very very cool idea for sentient colors" from writer Jenny Klein, though "alas, it never went anywhere."
While Entwistle's ambitious, time-bending vision ultimately didn't materialize at Netflix, the shift to Disney+ with a new creative team brings renewed hope for the franchise. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter since Power Rangers Cosmic Fury wrapped up in September 2023.
